Hi, welcome to ENGR 2192 intro to making. I’m Ryan, the CSI MakerSpace space supervisor and prototype technician. Feels like an appropriate title as I like to make things and enjoy helping others get their make on. This is my fifth year at Trinity and I’ve been fortunate enough to see the space grow from a single person garage to a real makerspace with a thriving community. In that time, my focus has shifted from layout and the arms race of machine acquisition (we have almost everything a maker could want) to  empowering the users (mostly students).

With that end in mind I enrolled in an MA in creative leadership program last summer. The program emphasizes D.E.V. and decentralized non-hierarchical management and decision making practices. So far, it has all been very applicable to the vibe of the CSI MakerSpace and has extracted from me the question: What could a student lead makerspace feel and look like at Trinity? I’m not sure, but I plan to find out. This semester, starting with our eight student workers, we'll propose our core values of inclusion and participation, define our decision making process, and establish future hiring/ volunteering rubrics and practices. Exciting times!

This will be iteration 5 of intro to making. A course that transformed the space from idea to reality. Maybe that's our theme. In this class we make ideas real. All and all, I’m pumped and ready to see how this group plays, creates, and helps each other along the way.
