Alicia Brechin Project 3: 3D Printing
Process
So, if you remember how I left off with the last project, I started off really excited about this project. I love to 3D print and had been trained in Maya 3D printing software, but because of cost and no access, I was unable to continue working with Maya. However, I was excited to see what I could learn in Fusion so I could continue my 3D printing journey.
Starting on day one I realized I struggled with the fact that for the practice model, I like to follow the instructions exactly so I know what is going on, and because of the intuitive nature of Fusion Modeling I found it difficult to do this. So, frustrated, I restarted with just the block and worked my way from there doing my own practice design. Step one was looking at the object to see what I wanted to build and I initially thought I could make it like a cute anime character design, aka make a cute face in a loaf of bread. The eyes worked out well, however, I completely forgot about the mirror line but I adjust to having the design be two-faced. Then I attempted to make a smile and this is where things got kinda horrendous looking, but again I continued with the concept. It looked unfinished with just the smile and eyes, so I decided to add ears, initially going for cat ears but then switching to bunny ears with there being two on each half for the two faces.
At this point, my practice model was finished and I then struggled to figure out my actual design. When my professor came by I showed him the practice design and he said I should actually print it out. I was unsure about how I felt about this since it was just a practice model, not the actual model, however, I had no other idea for an actual model. So on the second day of class, I was making some edits to the model, and then I found out I could import my maya designs into fusion to print it. So I attempted a first print with one of my old models. However, I wanted something bigger for the final product so I decided to actually print out my creepy toast bunny from before.
I got to printing and the first two stopped the filament towards the beginning but then it worked out so I was able to get the final print completed. Overall I was happy with the design even though it wasn't my initial plan for that design.
Result
Overall I like the design and the little smile looks like creepy pointy teeth so it looks even more like a creepy bunny.
Reflection
Fusion modeling is a little less structured than I am used to. In Maya, I had freedom and structure so that I could have specific sizes and also have freedom in the designs. In Fusion it's more freedom however I found it difficult to create as specific of a design. So it was a learning experience and I look forward to using it more and learning more about Fusion modeling.
